Cervical disc replacement surgery is performed to preserve the motion in the neck. This involves removing a damaged or diseased cervical disc and replacing it with an artificial disk. The procedure can put less stress on the remaining vertebrae compared to traditional disk surgery.

When there is a loss of space between the cervical vertebrae, part of the cervical disk or vertebrae can press on the spinal nerves or cord. Common causes are wear and tear or cervical disk degeneration.
