Cervical Disc Replacement
What is cervical disc replacement?
Cervical disc replacement surgery is performed to preserve the motion in the neck. This involves removing a damaged or diseased cervical disc and replacing it with an artificial disk. The procedure can put less stress on the remaining vertebrae compared to traditional disk surgery.
When there is a loss of space between the cervical vertebrae, part of the cervical disk or vertebrae can press on the spinal nerves or cord. Common causes are wear and tear or cervical disk degeneration.

What to expect with cervical disc replacement surgery
Cervical disc replacement surgery requires general anaesthesia. This means that the patient is unconscious for the duration of the procedure.
The surgeon moves the important structures of the neck to the side to make the cervical disk and the bones of the vertebrae visible. The cervical disc that needs replacement is removed and the surgeon secures the artificial disc into the empty disk space.
We have various different options available for this, inclusive of the Spinal Kinetics M6C, Aesculap Active C, Prodisc Vevo and Zimmer MobiC.
Sometimes a cervical disc replacement is not the best option for you. A cervical fusion, the standard operation, may be better. Even less commonly, a cervical foraminotomy may be a better approach as well. Your surgeon is best to make this decision in discussion with you.
